On June 18, 2013, St. David’s HealthCare will begin offering continuing medical education (CME) courses through its online education channel, StDavidsHealthCast.com. The first course, Advances in the Treatment of Asthma, is presented by Dominic de Keratry, M.D., and examines current and new treatment options for patients with asthma. There are more than 100,000 patients with severe persistent asthma in Texas alone. Because treatment options are limited, patients’ quality of life is often compromised.

St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center today announced the opening of a Center for Sleep Medicine in East Round Rock. The Center for Sleep Medicine is designed to diagnose and evaluate sleep disorders, which can include sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia or sleep-related seizures. This is St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center’s second sleep lab in Williamson County. The other center is located on the hospital’s main campus.

Two St. David’s HealthCare employees were recently named among the Texas Nurses Association’s “Fabulous 5” nurses. Camille Compton, a registered nurse and director of the emergency department at St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center, and Kathleen Dyre, a registered nurse at St. David’s Georgetown Hospital, were selected from numerous applicants in eight Central Texas counties.

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.

n Feb. 23, 2013, the Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute (TCAI) at St. David’s Medical Center became the first facility in Texas to treat a patient in a clinical trial to gather additional safety and effectiveness data on Attain Performa® Quadripolar Leads in patients who require cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), a treatment for heart failure that uses an implantable device to improve the pumping efficiency of the heart.

On April 17, 2013, St. David’s Georgetown Hospital joined the Texas Cord Blood Bank’s (TCBB) cord blood collection program, making it the first certified cord blood collection site in Williamson County. The TCBB, a division of the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC), is a nonprofit program established by the Texas Legislature in 2001 to collect umbilical cord blood, which can benefit patients—usually children—suffering from a number of potentially fatal diseases.

Comprehensive Stroke Centers offer the most advanced stroke treatment available in a given geographic region.

On Jan. 16, 2013, the Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute (TCAI) at St. David’s Medical Center treated the first patient in the Boston Scientific Corporation ZERO AF clinical trial to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Blazer® Open-Irrigated Temperature Ablation Catheter in patients with symptomatic, drug refractory paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation (A Fib). The first procedure in the United States was performed by J. David Burkhardt, M.D., F.H.R.S., F.A.C.C., cardiac electrophysiologist at TCAI.
