St. David's HealthCare Acquires Former Lakeside Hospital at Bastrop Facility

AUSTIN, Texas—St. David’s HealthCare today announced the acquisition of the former Lakeside Hospital at Bastrop facility, which closed in November 2010 and is scheduled to open early next year as the region’s third St. David’s Emergency Center.

“Bastrop has grown at a rapid pace, and we are working hard to keep up with essential services, from our police force to medical care,” The Honorable Terry Orr, mayor of Bastrop, said. “The arrival of St. David’s HealthCare is an important piece of the health care puzzle in our community, meeting significant needs at a significant time. We are very pleased St. David’s HealthCare is making this investment in our community.”

St. David’s Emergency Center in Bastrop will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as a full-service, freestanding emergency department, without attached inpatient facilities. It will serve as an extension of St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, which treated more adult patients than any other emergency department in Austin in 2010. St. David’s South Austin Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Todd Steward will have oversight of the new facility and all clinical staff will be hospital employees.

“St. David’s South Austin Medical Center has long been a leader in providing quality health care to patients in Central Texas,” Steward said. “This facility allows us to bring that same level of expertise to the residents of Bastrop in a fraction of the time, offering quality care by board-certified emergency room physicians and nurses with experience treating trauma-related injuries and medical emergencies to patients. In an emergency, patients want quality, convenient care they can trust.”
St. David’s Emergency Center in Bastrop will feature treatment beds, a trauma room, advanced testing capabilities including radiological testing and a medical lab, among others.

Physician staffing will be provided by Capitol Emergency Associates, the group of board-certified emergency medicine physicians providing care in St. David’s HealthCare emergency departments throughout Central Texas.

“Freestanding emergency departments are a growing trend in the health care industry,” John Blewett, M.D., president of Capitol Emergency Associates, said. “They can help alleviate busy emergency rooms and provide patients with exceptional medical care in a timely manner.”

St. David’s HealthCare’s transaction to acquire Lakeside Hospital at Bastrop was executed as a lease agreement on August 18, 2011. St. David’s HealthCare will spend the coming months making facility renovations and equipping the building to better accommodate patient needs. St. David’s HealthCare is not disclosing financial terms of the agreement.
