St. David's Medical Center Hosts Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Reunion, Allowing Patients to Reunite With Caregivers

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

AUSTIN—On Saturday, October 15, 2011, St. David’s Medical Center will host a reunion for the families of infants who spent time in St. David’s Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)—giving them a chance to reunite with the nurses and doctors who cared for them as infants.

Approximately 300 NICU graduates are expected to attend this year’s reunion, which will feature face painting, pumpkin painting, games, food and music.

“Because of the intense nature of the care provided for babies in the NICU and the length of their stay, doctors and nurses often form lifelong relationships with patients and their families,” Rhonda Sageser, NICU director at St. David’s Medical Center, said. “In addition to giving families a chance to reconnect with their babies’ caregivers, this event also gives doctors and nurses a chance to see, firsthand, the impact they have had on the lives of so many babies. Seeing infants who were once too small to survive on their own growinto healthy, happy toddlers is an indescribable feeling.”

Because the hospital’s neonatal transport team brings NICU patients from surrounding areas for a higher level of care, attendees will likely travel from communities across Central Texas for the reunion.

The reunion will be held on Saturday, October 15, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in St. David’s Medical Center’s Barclay Park, located just outside of the cafeteria off of the basement floor of the hospital. St. David’s Medical Center is located at 919 East 32nd Street.
