St. David's North Austin Medical Center Cancer Program Receives National Recognition

Monday, January 30, 2012

Cancer Program Receives Three-Year Accreditation Award with Commendation from the Commission on Cancer

The Cancer Program at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center has been awarded a three-year accreditation with commendation in all eight evaluation areas from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons for its commitment to comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for cancer patients.

“This accreditation speaks volumes about the high level of care we provide for our oncology patients,” Allen Harrison, chief executive officer at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, said. “From the moment of diagnosis, we know that exceptional care is critical to help with the patient’s recovery and quality of life.”

The Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard setting, prevention, research, education and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care. Its membership includes 100 individuals who are either surgeons representing the American College of Surgeons or representatives from the 49 national, professional organizations affiliated with the Commission on Cancer.

The Accreditation Program, a component of the Commission on Cancer, encourages hospitals, treatment centers and other facilities to improve their quality of patient care through various cancer-related programs. These programs focus on prevention, early diagnosis, pretreatment evaluation, staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, surveillance for recurrent disease, support services and end-of-life care.

Accreditation by the Commission on Cancer is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. To maintain approval, facilities with Commission on Cancer-approved cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years.
