St. David's HealthCare Names Medical Director of St. David's Emergency Center in Bastrop

St. David's HealthCare has named Corey Jones, M.D., medical director of the new St. David's Emergency Center in Bastrop, located at the site of the former Lakeside Hospital at Bastrop. In this role, Dr. Jones will oversee the medical operations of the new center.

"Dr. Jones has more than 10 years of experience treating emergent medical conditions and has gained a wealth of knowledge in emergency medicine during that time," Todd Steward, chief executive officer of St. David's South Austin Medical Center, said. "We know that he will be able to effectively lead and grow this emergency center, offering exceptional emergency care to the residents of Bastrop."

Dr. Jones has served as an emergency medicine physician with Capitol Emergency Associates (CEA)-the group of board-certified emergency medicine physicians that provides care in all St. David's HealthCare emergency departments throughout Central Texas-since 2002. He currently works primarily at St. David's Medical Center in Central Austin, where he has served as the chairman of emergency medicine and medical director since 2004. In this role, Dr. Jones is responsible for overseeing the medical safety and quality of care provided by the department, as well as providingoversight of staff physicians. St. David's Medical Center treats about 55,000 patients in its emergency room every year.

Dr. Jones was also instrumental in transitioning the emergency department through a major physical expansion in 2004 and 2005. Additionally, he worked closely with hospital administrators in achieving the status of a National Stroke Center and a Chest Pain Center of Excellence.

In addition to being board certified in emergency medicine, Dr. Jones is board certified in hyperbaric medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

He is the medical director of the Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Care Clinic at St. David's South Austin Medical Center, where he has served since February 2012. Dr. Jones has worked as a hyperbaric medicine consultant since 2005, practicing at St. David's Medical Center, St. David's South Austin Medical Center and St. David's North Austin Medical Center.

Dr. Jones earned his bachelor's degree in biology and liberal arts from St. Olaf College in Minnesota and went on to earn his master's in animal physiology and genetics from the University of Minnesota. He was awarded his Doctorate of Medicine by the University of North Carolina and completed his emergency medicine residency at Detroit Medical Center.

Dr. Jones is a member of the Travis County Medical Society and the Travis County Medical Society EMS Advisory Council, as well as a former chairman of the council. He is also a member of the Medical Executive Committee at St. David's Medical Center and a founding member of the Stroke Subcommittee for Neurosciences at St. David's Medical Center. Additionally, he sits on the CEA board of directors, where he has served since July 2004. Dr. Jones is a former member of the Travis County Healthcare Board subcommittee on Mental Health and the St. David's Medical Center Quality Management and Medical Records Committee.

Dr. Jones will be transitioning out of his leadership role at St. David's Medical Center in June 2012 to assume the responsibilities of medical director of the newly built St. David's Emergency Center in Bastrop.

St. David's Emergency Center in Bastrop will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as a full-service, free-standing emergency department, without attached inpatient facilities. It will feature state-of-the-art equipment, a staff of trauma-certified nurses, a trauma room, advanced testingcapabilities including radiological testing and a medical lab, CT scans, x-rays and ultrasounds.

The St. David's Emergency Center, which is scheduled to open June 18, will serve as an extension of St. David's South Austin Medical Center's emergency department.

AUSTIN, Texas-This month, St. David's HealthCare began building the new St. David's Emergency Center in Bastrop, located at the site of the former Lakeside Hospital at Bastrop. St. David's HealthCare acquired the former Lakeside Hospital at Bastrop facility in August 2011-after the hospital closed its doors in November 2010. The St. David's Emergency Center, which is scheduled to open June 18, will serve as an extension of St. David's South Austin Medical Center's emergency department.

"The building itself will remain intact, but we are renovating the portion of the facility where we will operate the emergency center so that we may better meet the needs of our patients," Todd Steward, chief executive officer of St. David's South Austin Medical Center, said. "As this vibrant community works to rebuild the Bastrop region, its residents need quality emergency care close to home. We are eager to offer this service to the people living in and around Bastrop later this year."

St. David's Emergency Center in Bastrop will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as a full-service, free-standing emergency department, without attached inpatient facilities. It will feature state-of-the-art equipment, a staff of trauma-certified nurses, a trauma room, advanced testing capabilities including radiological testing and a medical lab, CT scans, x-rays and ultrasounds.

St. David's HealthCare has hired the initial management staff for the facility and will continue hiring other staff positions throughout 2012. Physician staffing will be provided by Capitol Emergency Associates, the group of board-certified emergency medicine physicians providing care in St. David's HealthCare emergency departments throughout Central Texas.

St. David's Round Rock Medical Center Announces Level II Trauma Center Designation

St. David's Round Rock Medical Center Remains Busiest Trauma Center in Williamson County

ROUND ROCK, Texas-St. David's Round Rock Medical Center announced today that the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the State of Texas have officially designated the hospital as a Level II Trauma Center. St. David's Round Rock Medical Center began treating all levels of trauma patients, including the most severely injured and critical patients, on Jan. 4, 2010, and has treated more trauma patients than any other hospital in Williamson County.

The designation is a seal of approval from the American College of Surgeons and the State of Texas signifying that the hospital and staff have met all requirements of a Level II Trauma Center and are prepared to treat all trauma patients.

"We are pleased to receive this designation, and we are proud of our exceptional team that has worked tirelessly to make it happen," David Martin, M.D., chief medical officer of St. David's Round Rock Medical Center, said. "What makes us most proud is the care we have provided to the most critically injured residents of Williamson and Travis Counties."

St. David's Round Rock Medical Center has treated more than 1,500 trauma patients since 2010.

"Our trauma team is extremely dedicated and skilled in caring for the most severely injured and critical patients," Michael Craun, M.D., trauma medical director at St. David's Round Rock Medical Center, said. "We have built a trauma team over the last year and a half that is second to none, and I am tremendously proud of the patient care we have provided together."

During the designation process, St. David's Round Rock Medical Center recruited highly qualified trauma personnel to further develop its trauma team. The hospital's comprehensive trauma team includes four trauma surgeons, in addition to Dr. Craun, including Andy Hawthorne, M.D.; Brady E. Anderson, M.D.; Bratcher Runyan, M.D; and Aravind Sankar, M.D., FACS.

The trauma center also boasts of a five-member orthopedic trauma team, led by Mark Parella, M.D., a trauma-trained orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Parella is joined by Michael S. Valastro, M.D.; Jennifer N. Lord, M.D.; Mustasim N. Rumi, M.D.; and Jay M. Borick, M.D.

The trauma center at St. David's Round Rock Medical Center also has the support of a neurological trauma team, which includes four neurosurgeons from the NeuroTexas Institute at St. David's HealthCare: Mark Burnett, M.D.; Douglas Fox, Jr., M.D.; James Waldron, M.D.; and Kristopher Webb, M.D.

Although it isn't required of Level II Trauma Centers by the ACS, St. David's Round Rock Medical Center requires that trauma surgeons be onsite when they are on call. It is currently the only trauma program in Williamson County with this policy.

"In the case of an emergent trauma situation, the faster a patient receives care, the better his or her outcome will be," Craun said. "With this in mind, we think having on-call surgeons onsite at all times is the right thing to do.

The hospital has a helipad that allows patients to arrive via emergency air transport, as well as a trauma room with its own dedicated trauma entrance for emergency medical transports.

The hospital's emergency department (ED), which is the largest volume ED in all of Williamson County with more than 40,000 visits per year, receives trauma patients transferred from Williamson County EMS and Austin/Travis County EMS, among others. Of the 1,549 trauma patients since January 2010, 258 were admitted to the intensive care unit, and more than 600 patients required an operative procedure related to their trauma injuries.

The top two causes of trauma in patients treated at St. David's Round Rock Medical Center were injuries as a result of a motor vehicle collision or a fall.

St. David's Round Rock Medical Center Announces New Director of Trauma Services

ROUND ROCK, Texas-St. David's Round Rock Medical Center has named Karla Hosick, BSN, the new director of trauma services for its trauma program. With more than 12 years of experience in the trauma field, Hosick will oversee administrative and management aspects of the trauma program at St. David's Round Rock Medical Center.

Specifically, Hosick will manage the human and fiscal part of the trauma program at St. David's Round Rock Medical Center, as well as develop trauma program personnel and assist with compliance of regulatory and professional standards. She will also have an active role in strategic planning for the program and in developing collaborative relationships internally and externally.

Previously, Hosick served as the trauma nurse coordinator at Good Samaritan Hospital in Nebraska for the past 11 years. In this role, she was responsible for preparing the program for trauma surveys by the American College of Surgeons, handling the day-to-day collaboration between trauma medical directors and physicians involved in trauma care, and was a part of the trauma peer review and trauma improvement committees, among other responsibilities.

A graduate of University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Nursing-Lincoln Division, Hosick earned her bachelor's degree in nursing in 1993. That same year, she received her professional licensure as a registered professional nurse. Hosick is currently pursuing a master's degree in nursing from Nebraska Methodist College.

"With her extensive experience in trauma services, Karla is an excellent addition to our trauma team at St. David's Round Rock Medical Center," Deborah Ryle, chief executive officer at St. David's Round Rock Medical Center, said. "We believe that her previous work in trauma will be a valuable asset to our trauma program, and we gladly welcome her on board."

Hosick assumed her duties as director of trauma services in November 2011.
