Your Baby's Physician

Your baby’s physician is notified of your baby’s birth and will provide instructions for his or her care while you are in the hospital. If you have not chosen a physician for your baby, the hospital will assign your newborn’s care to one of our experienced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners/Neonatologist and provide you with a list of practicing pediatricians in the area. The hospital may also assign this service if your baby’s pediatrician does not have privileges at our hospital. You may resume care with your baby’s physician/clinic of choice after discharge. Your baby’s physician will examine your baby within the first 24 hours after birth. Do not hesitate to ask the doctor questions. ReMeMBeR, it is important to choose a pediatrician before your baby’s arrival. Your baby will need to be seen within a few days after discharge from the hospital.

Helpful hints when choosing your baby’s physician:

  • Make an appointment with your baby’s physician while you are still pregnant
  • Discuss any special concerns you have had during pregnancy
  • Ask about office hours and what to do in an emergency
  • Find out if he or she will answer some questions over the phone after the baby is born
  • Ask how soon after birth you should plan to take your baby to the physician’s office for his or her first check-up
  • Be sure the physician’s services are covered by your health plan or discuss payment options

Protecting Your Newborn

Along with providing an environment of outstanding care, our primary concern
is the safety and protection of your newborn. St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center employs various measures to prevent unauthorized access to your baby, which will be explained to you in detail when your baby arrives. You can help us keep your baby safe by following these guidelines:

  • Never leave your baby unattended
  • when walking with your baby in the hallway, your baby must remain in the bassinet
  • Please have all family members and visitors wash their hands before holding or touching the baby
  • Keep the bulb syringe in a top corner of the bassinet so it is readily available if needed
  • Keep your room lights on or dimmed so that you may watch your baby
  • when you are in bed with the baby, keep the side rails of your bed up
  • when you are asleep, keep your baby in the bassinet close to your bed and on the side farthest away from the door
  • Remember to place your baby on his or her back to sleep
  • Upon discharge you must have an infant car seat securely placed in your vehicle. Due to the variety of car seats available, the nursing staff will depend on you to secure your infant in the car seat according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Identification and Security

Your baby will be fitted with two identification bracelets that will match ones placed on you and your partner’s wrist. Please do not remove these identification bracelets. They are necessary for the protection of your baby during the hospital stay. In addition, your baby will be given a security device that is specifically assigned to your baby. This device enables your caregivers to determine the whereabouts of your baby at all times.

Access to the nursery is a privilege for special moments for you, your partner and family. We ask that you be sensitive to the privacy and safety of all babies especially during shift changes and during the times when physicians examine the babies
