While our wish is for everyone to have a healthy baby, occasionally babies need special care. Our Level III NICU has been recognized as a Center of Excellence by Vermont Oxford Network based on our exceptional neonatal outcomes. Our NICU provides technologically advanced, state-of-the-art equipment and procedures for babies who are premature or have special needs. With 65 beds, St. David’s Medical Center’s Level III NICU is the largest in Central Texas.
Our dedicated Neonatologists and experienced RNs are here to manage your newborn’s medical and surgical emergencies. Prior to your infant’s discharge, we encourage you to spend a night with your baby in a specialized, private sleep room. This will allow you to become more familiar with his or her care and special needs.
Our NICU features:
- 24/7 Neonatology coverage
- Speech Therapists
- Physical Therapists
- Occupational Therapists
- Lactation Services
- N.R.P and S.T.A.B.L.E. providers
- Pharmacy only for NICU, inside the NICU
- Neonatology trained Dietitian
- Rooming-in rooms, providing a comfortable, private transition environment, with the NICU staff just steps away to provide support and answer any questions.
We extend our reach for providing life-saving care through St. David's Medical Center’s Maternal / Neonatal Transport Team. This service offers help and hope for expectant mothers and babies who need the skill and technology of a Level III NICU, but are being cared for at a facility that does not offer these services.

Under the direction of a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialists and Neonatologists, our team of certified registered nurses, and respiratory therapists travels throughout a 100-mile radius to bring expectant mothers and newborns to our Level III NICUs, with STAR Flight providing air transport for critically ill expectant mothers and babies. The area served extends south to New Braunfels, north to Temple, west to Llano and east to Bryan/College Station.
Our Maternal / Neonatal Transport Team works to stabilize the expectant mother and baby's condition prior to traveling. Upon arrival, the transport nurse calls the referring facility to report on the status of the expectant mother and baby. Weekly updates are faxed to both the transporting hospital and doctor to keep them informed of their patient’s progress.
Our Maternal Transport program supports transferring expectant mothers prior to delivery to St. David's Medical Center if the baby is premature or a medical problem is anticipated. In these cases, the baby benefits from immediate access to our Level III NICU after delivery. The St. David's Maternal / Neonatal Transport Team provides 24-hour emergency transportation, and specialized care while en route.
